Brandon Running Association Monthly Meeting Notes:

September 17, 2008

Bill McKnight:
The Brandon Running Club has $5,081 in the treasury.
We have $11,800 in sponsorship for the Brandon Half-Marathon. The goal is to raise $30,000 for
MDA.
Details for the Half-Marathon
·
Sunday, December 7, 2008.
·        No course change.
·        Walker friendly – we will keep police on the course for as long as it takes.
·        Kathy McKnight is handing the shirts. They will be same design and fabric as last year but a
different color.
·        Race price will remain the same: $25 pre-register, $30 race day.
·        There will be a 5K and half marathon.
·        Packet pick-up will be on Saturday, December 6 from 1:00-4:00 at Sports Authority.
·        Packet assembly will be Friday, December 5, evening, at Sports Authority.
·        We are still looking for sponsors if you know of anyone interested.
·        The jobs will hopefully stay the same as last year.
·        Water stops will be taken care of by YMCA and a sorority.
·        During last year’s event, Tom Mistrot took hundreds of pictures and posted them on a yahoo site.
These pictures are available for free to participants. He will do the same again this year. We should
get this information into our marketing so that people know they can have free pictures of themselves.

Mike (not sure of last name):
Training for the Disney Marathon with Team in Training in honor of a friend’s daughter who was
recently diagnosed with AML (a type of leukemia). This little girl’s name is Bella, and she is only 9
months old. Mike is looking for sponsorship and support and was asking for advice on how to go
about getting sponsors.  Also, Bella will be needing a lot of A-negative blood. If you have this blood
type and are willing to donate on her behalf, please contact Florida Blood Services.

Don Clark:
Next Friday, September 26, Don will be hosting a scavenger hunt type race for seniors in the Brandon
area. It is a 6/10 of a mile walk and will be at 502 Sadie (off Parsons, south of SR 60).
It should be noted that Don and Grace Clark put on about 9 of these functions a year and donate
proceeds to the Brandon Running Club. Each race nets about $200 for our club, so THANK YOU Don
and Grace!

Brad Frank:
Brad was a guest speaker and was here to pitch an upcoming race that he is directing. It
is the inaugural race and is advertised as “Racing to Improve the Lives of Veterans”. All proceeds will
benefit the Veteran’s Hospital. The race will be held on Sunday, November 2, 2008, and includes a
10K, 5K and 1 mile fun run. Also, the race will be held at USF. For people unfamiliar with that course,
you will come up Sycamore which is UPHILL. He just signed on their first big sponsor, DICK’S
Sporting Goods, donating running shoes for the overall winners in the 5K and 10K. For more
information, please visit
www.veteransmemorialrace.com.

Chris Sholosky:  Spoke to us about another upcoming race (or fun run?) called Cure Kids Cancer
Challenge. This race will be held on September 13, 2008 in Fishhawk. For more information please
visit
www.fastercure.com or e-mail Chris at shaloskyc@hotmail.com.

Bill McKnight:  The Brandon Half-Marathon will be on the 1st Sunday in December as it always is.
This is December 7. Packet assembly will be on Friday night. We will promote the race as walker
friendly and pay the police to stay longer.  BRA donated $500 to the family of Christine Rasher. She
was an active member of the Fishhawk Running Club and was diagnosed with a brain tumor early
this summer. She passed away shortly after her diagnosis leaving a husband and two sons. Steve
Dunn of the Fishhawk Running Club donated all profits from his 2nd cross country series race to her
family.

Tom Mistrot:  Some members of the BRA have formed 2 12-person teams to compete in the Ragnar
Relay across Florida being held November 14-15. The race will go from Clearwater to Daytona and is
comprised of 36 legs. Each runner will run 3 legs ranging in distance from 3-9 miles.   Each team
must supply 3 volunteers for the race. At this time we have 6! Thank you Tina Czech, Julie Patterson,
Don and Grace Clark, Don and Carolyn Roberts.   The Ragnar race is also looking for people
interested in becoming S.W.A.T. volunteers. These are super volunteers who will manage and
supervise 6 stations. They will be trained by Ragnar and will then be flown to other races to supervise
stations at those races.

For more information about the race or about becoming a volunteer, please visit
